Texas was my first time overseas, ever! I was so excited and in awe of everything and anything. Massive Aloe Vera plants in people’s gardens, huge fridges….everything was like “wow!”
I’ve been to five states in the US and Texas was by far the most friendly. In fact it is the most welcoming place I’ve ever been anywhere in the world. The people are absolute gold.
This page won’t display properly on the Substack app for some reason, but luckily I can read it on email. Texas feels like my spiritual home through the novels of Joe R. Lansdale and the songs of Michelle Shocked. I even have family in Austin, but I’ve never been. This poem makes me want to remedy that.
Yes a couple of comments have come through to me as emails but don’t show here as comments too which is odd. It was my first trip overseas and I was there 3 months. I have nothing but great things to say about Texas and Texans.
Then people I met there, made that trip - everyone wanted you over for dinner, to show you around, put you up….and it was so different to my vision of it - so green and lush. I had imagined it all really desert like.
I should just add, sometimes I don’t remember him as a ‘constant carol of caramel’ (jeez that line has me thinking of Constance Carrol brand makeup now anyone remember that?😂)
I had an absolute ball. I wrote another piece on it but will save it. All about how I felt like I was living in “Dallas” . After years with skint musicians (my usual ‘type’😂) I had this cool American boyfriend who took me out on real actual dates 😂😂
It really was a fabulous time!

That’s a beautiful way of remembering past relationships.
Beautiful poetry, as always xx
Thank you :)
