A few days ago, I was approached by someone from a fairly well known (in some circles) publication about something I had written (my AI piece).
He wanted to ‘knock it into an article’
I thought about this and was quite forthright. I told him no, it already WAS an article. He was fine to use it as it was, but the reason people had read and shared it was because it wasn’t in the same bland format so many ‘articles’ take.
It prompted me to write this piece.
I will only ever write things that come from a place of pure heartfelt integrity. I will not have my work changed to suit a certain audience. It is fine as it is.
I create because I love to create.
And anyone who thinks I give a rat’s arse about sucking up to anything or anyone else, can frankly, go and whistle.
I adore this piece. It’s sublime. Enid Blyton meets the Star-Bellied Sneetch. So many great touches: the man disrespectfully kicking the oven with his expensive polished shoe; the use of the word ‘elevenses’; the description of the robin cocking it’s head (like all birds do).
What you have done, in my reckoning, is taken a sentiment that could easily have become a rant (not that I don’t enjoy those too) but then spooned in sweet dollops of love and mixed it up into something very special and heartwarming. Disarmingly beautiful in the way it delivers the message.
I love this Julie! When our children were a younger, I used to make pizza (from scratch) every Saturday. Needless to say the kids loved it. "Oh Dad, you should open a pizza restaurant - people will love it!" I wasn't convinced this was a great idea - I'd much rather please my family. :-)
A lovely story and important message, Julie. The most important part of the creative process is the love we bring to it and the joy we take from it. And kudos to you for keeping your AI essay as originally written. A courageous and self-affirming decision.
Well, I don't know about that, love of a clean bathroom is often what gets me scrubbing when it gets too bad. And there's a certain amount of joy in having it done with, in enjoying the clean, and in knowing I have a free week or more before having to tackle this again 😀
I’m not saying, don’t listen to the opinions of others, of course input helps you grow whatever it is you do. But intuition and having the right intentions must always come first. I’m at a point these days (after a couple of run ins with people along the way😂) where I feel able to defend my work. To say “no…erm, hang on a minute!”
And I’m pleased about that.
We all should. If it’s something you love doing, that must never change, and if it has, ask yourself why that is.

More power to you Julie.
Brava, Julie!
Not sure whether to put this one on FB or not, if it might be a bit long. Hmm…..
Yes! Put it on. It'll be hugely appreciated ❤️

Your work is spectacularly fine as it is.
Thank you.
I thought the message I wanted to get out there would be more relatable to more people delivered as a story.
And I have been baking this morning too - a cake for my son’s birthday, so I guess there was a creative collision 😂

Aww, bless. Yes some things aren’t worth spoiling are they? :)
Loved it
Good :)

It’s a slippery slope and I ain’t for sliding!
Thank you lovely.
Do it for the love of it or not at all. (Unless it’s cleaning the bathroom in which case mine would never get done😂)

I make my own cleaning sprays these days using white vinegar and essential oils so I do endeavour to make it as pleasant a task as I possibly can. :)
This needs to be drank with a bit of @coffee time.
❤️
I love this!
It gave me goosebumps and also made me cry (I'm very hormonal though)! Lol
But this is so spot on.
xx
*Substack being very glitchy. I've struggled to write this?!
I think we are all our own worst critics.
