The grass isn’t greener on the ‘other side’.
It is many shades.
There are dips and peaks.
Hills to climb.
Rivers to cross.
You will find more walls.
You will find gates to unlock, stiles to navigate.
You will find both flowers that seduce
…….and nettles that sting.
You will find things you want to keep.
…….and stuff you want to shake the hell off.
You will find respite under shady trees.
You will be exposed and vulnerable.
You will hear beautiful birdsong.
You will hear annoying buzzing flies.
You will meet mesmerising butterflies
…….and troublesome biters who feed on you.
And you will always, always see other pastures from where you are, and wonder…..
If the grass is greener
And in those pastures, somewhere so far away you can’t quite make them out, there will be a person looking over at your side of the valley .
And they, will be pondering……..
Just how green, lush and wonderful………
YOUR grass looks.
I love the natural setting of your latest pearl of wisdom. Those who have grown up in the age of social media may be forgiven for thinking that the feeling that everyone else has a better existence than us is a recent affliction - and, let’s face it, big tech has only exacerbated the scope of our lifestyle envy. But your imagery shows us that this has always been part of our nature for as long as we’ve walked the earth and as long as our neighbours have had Oxen to covet. Maybe we need this part of our nature to spur us on to pastures new, but it also risk us living a life without gratitude for what we’ve got. It’s something we have to balance within ourselves.
A lot of truth there.
