Funnily enough I made 3 blackberry and apple crumbles a couple of days ago. The hedge in front of our house is laden with blackberries and being in Somerset, people have always got boxes of freebie apples outside their gates. A lot of apple trees in Somerset 😁

Free apples outside houses! That’s cool. I remember when I lived in Bristol I went to an apple festival at a local garden centre and I was thrilled to try a few if the different kinds. I love those kind with the pink flesh, you can sometimes buy them near me and every year I try and secure one as to me they are the most fairytale of apples 🍎 ❤️

Discovery apples with the pink flesh - at their best straight from the tree...

When I worked in a rural GP practice one of my colleagues would pick them fresh from a huge tree in her garden each morning and bring them to work for us.

Juicy perfumed crisp deliciousness.

My absolutely favourite apple..

Oh wow I’ll remember that’s what they are. What a fine and fitting name for this fairytale apple!🧚‍♀️

They look delicious, but then crumbles of any kind get my vote 👍🏻. Accompanied naturally with lashings of custard or cream 😋.

So cozy.

(That's a keen little fella amongst the berries!)

Thanks. Love a fruit crumble or a pie this time of year.

forget the recipe, that column was more poetic than most or all of the poetry I've read on Substack so far, except mine of course

I acquired an allotment plot a couple of months ago. Can't wait to get going properly.

Yes, sadly, I had to give mine up because they didn’t have a water point and refused to install one so in the end it became very frustrating. Shame though because I really enjoyed my space there, not having a garden. I’m sure you will love it!

Ta. I saw someone buying blackberries this morning in Sainsburys and nearly swore! It seems so mad when they are everywhere around us for free. Aren’t people dicks?🙄😂

Theres so much detachment from our environment I think. I blame cars. Ive started getting out of mine and walking much more.

I haven’t got one and I think it helps massively. I think that’s partly why my son has always been such a good walker too, he’s never known any different.

Aww thank you. I wanted to evoke feelings of homeliness, childhood and tradition.🥰

You certainly did that, although for me it was seeing Toni Arthur. Impossible not to think of Brian Cant and Derek Griffiths as well. Ginger is my crumble topping tweak.

Cheers.

I’ve not tried ginger in crumble. Thank you for the suggestion.

Yes I liked anything like that🥰

I wrote about Brambly Hedge and then when I mentioned plums, started thinking of Victoria Plum too 🥰

Oh bless. Kids say such cute things but yeah that’s a sad reflection of society eh?

My elderly neighbour brought us some eggs the other day as she keeps lots of chickens. I love it when people give you stuff like that. My Russian neighbour gave me a string of her onions once. I don’t think I’ve ever had them on a string before. It felt like someone had made me a vegetable necklace 😂😂

There are loads of people go foraging mushrooms round here but knowing my luck I’d end up dead or tripping my arse off😂😂x

My mum was always really paranoid about us picking fruit and would always remind us of the grubs in em and that dogs wee’d on the low ones. Hmm…Cheers mum…

I’m the opposite. I love the taste of sun warmed berries in my mouth and couldn’t give a toss what has pissed on it.

No I haven’t ever had magic mushrooms. I think I’m too much of a control freak and would worry about what I was unable to control. I probably have a few PDA traits like my son. Weed is as adventurous as I ever got.😂
