A friend of mine asked me to write a poem about Shetland where she lives. She moved a couple of years ago from England and she and her family adore it there.
I welcomed the idea, as sometimes I get stuck for what to write about.
So here it is. I had to keep looking at the words as I’d just finished it and have a rubbish memory.
Enchanted Island
In an English town, one day
I listened to my calling
My future told a land of old
A glistening ocean sprawling
.
We packed our hopes as fallen stars
Scattered them to chance
As seeds they grew, finding the dew
Now in the sun, they dance
.
My children thrive, their limbs alive
Aglow on all they feel
We swapped the pace of human race
For something raw and real
.
Northern Lights are emerald kites
That thread black velvet sky
Orcas play out in the bay
As Merlins soar on high
.
Dolphins swim as storms set in
To bruise my gaze with pearl
Boats resist the watery kiss
Of sea’s tempestuous swirl
.
The cluck of chickens by my feet
The journeys on the ferry
Home grown produce that we eat
Each foraged plant and berry
.
A jewel cast unto the mist
From Scotland’s heathered highland
I pray we’ll stay for many a day
On this enchanted island.
I should add, I’ve never been there.
I wrote this piece based on what I know of her and her family and the fabulous videos and photos she posts of the glorious nature there.
I have been to Scotland though. I went last summer and will definitely be back.
What a treat!
She told me she likes the poem anyway, so that makes me smile :)
That’s gorgeous…. loved how you wove in your friend’s journey too, as well as capturing the charm and beauty of the isle. Stunning look too as always 💋
