My life seems to have been dotted with the types of encounters I describe here. I think I just have something about me that invites randoms to chat with me.

I used to post poems I’d written at the time on an old website called ‘Starlite Cafe’. Early days of the internet. The site was pulled down and all my poems gone. That said, I’d cringe at most of them now.

But I remember writing a poem about him, the guy I met on the street that night. Describing his skin as ‘orange peel old’ because of its properties - the way indentations and imperfection can never conceal glow.

You have a lovely way with words, treacle. The porn basement bit made me chuckle. 🤣😬

That said, many things can bind us. Music is one of the great ‘binders.’ It can transport you in the now or then.

Even as a hard rock & metal-head, I really enjoyed Prince, & Ray Charles. Purple Rain always gets me. He was such an under-rated guitar player. And ‘Just Because’ by Ray Charles is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

I’ve often said I feel slightly sorry for todays generation and their mass-produced, collaboratively written, auto-tuned nonsense.

Anyway, have a great day!

Cheers.

That basement was fucking grim.

Porn and statues of Batman. What a combo😂😂

Had a water bed too. 🤢

Who even has one of those?

It made me feel seasick 😂

It was not a nice time in my life.

Should’ve stayed in Hawaii or flown somewhere else but what did I know?

Yes I know it’s cliché but I enjoy lots of different genres of music too.

Those times are what make us, though. We don’t know good times unless we’ve been through the bad. Funny old world, eh!?

This really resonated with me. First of all because I Ioved Prince and saw him on stage. He sang 'Nothing Compares to U' which he wrote of course, but recorded by Sinead O'connor. I also saw Ray Charles in concert many years ago. So memories came flooding back of a former life!

On another note, when I was much younger I was told I looked like Petula Clark... of Downton fame.

Thank you, lovely.

Oh you saw him live? What a treat. I bet that was unreal!

And Ray Charles? Get you, gig girl🔥

Bet you were a doll. Petula was pretty

I stay because he has a golden voice that makes clocks stop. When you carry that kind of poetry inside you, the most mundane of experiences could become be an adventure. Thank you for sharing another vibrant moment from the past.

Thank you, Christian.

‘Vibrant’

In that way an estate agent would describe a shit housing estate. Yeah. Was that alright😂😂

I try to make the moments as interesting as I can. As we all must, eh?

If I had to guess I'd say it was your intuition but like most of us at that age, you probably hadn't learned to recognise it as such.

Aspirations come ... and sometimes they materialise and sometimes they don't. But they can always be replaced with new ones.

(And you're lucky you weren't murdered in that basement!)

😂 I laugh but it’s not funny really. Sometimes I wonder what that sleep paralysis was about there, whether there really were restless souls down there or something, was very freaky.

That really drew me in. 👍

I'm so sad for the 1999 you. I relate, as someone who made choices I regret around that same time, and having a similar family lore, I didn't seek the help or have the guidance I wished I did. I had dreams of a malevolent force - maybe our psyches recognize when we put ourselves in a bad place. I hope you escaped the basement dweller. Such foreshadowing. I love your writing, this is the first thing I picked to read of yours.
