June Smile
Stepped outside, barefoot
June slippered soles in tarmac
There I stood, absorbent
Vessel for her warm charm.
I swallowed dawn through pores
Coos of contented pigeons
Tinkling of water
Felt lanterned on the inside
Dark shook away as dry mud
Fell from me in black crumbs
Peace climbed up from my centre
Rising bubble in a tumbler
And then it found an exit
Reached my lips and surfaced
Joined the open flowers
Another joyful set of petals
Strawberry Moon
I fled into a strawberry moon
One evening with my thought
A fisher girl with open net
To see what could be caught
Surveyed the promises as sprats
They leapt back in the sea
But how I loved each silver chance
Before they swam from me
One night
If we only had one night
I’d wander mazes in your eyes
Entering their pale prize
Anchoring them stable with my own
I’d watch the wick of you catch fire
Hot mist arise as scarlet smoke
Feel it coil around my core
The plume of you, a passion cloak
I’d breathe you in, September rose
Wishing I’d found you in your bud
So we’d have had so many nights
To weave the perfume of our love
Beautiful day
Beautiful day,
How you raise me to flight!
I shall drink in your rays
Pause myself in rose light
New rain has to fall
And more clouds must appear
But I vow to devour all you hold
Whilst you’re here.
Beautiful poems 👏👏
Precious poems. I love Strawberry Moon. A pure ode to possibility. There is a Tom Waits song called Grapefruit Moon which, whilst more melancholy, also captures that sense of grasping for whatever eludes us but is not necessarily beyond our reach.
