Wow July what a moving story!!! He sounds like he was such an amazing boss!! Who truly cared about his staff!! Such a tragic fate!! 💔 my moms twin brother was named Daryl and he to unfortunately took his own life...it was such a devastating loss!! I miss my uncle every night!! He had a terrible car wreck when I was 12 and suffered a major brain injury...he struggled with bipolar for many years...he would always call me late night because he also had insomnia...I no longer have anyone to talk to since he passed!! Thank you for sharing your wonderful story!! Its really touching!!

A beautiful, inspiring and sobering story. How many of us get mistaken for waving when we’re drowning?

One can only speculate as to what might have filled his emptiness or silenced his demons.

I love the thought of Daryl’s spirit and ethos living on in you. Others will surely do the same with your impact and agency as you fade to ashes and dust. A collective immortality is assured.

I have good memories of working there. If I’d stayed in York, I’d have stayed in that job a while as it was so varied and interesting. I remember at that meeting Cheryl Baker’s manager (who was hosting the event) talking about her arriving in a helicopter. 😂 For that event we had a different phone line and so we’d know who they wanted, I had a different name. Laura. Was funny once when they wanted to speak with both Julie and Laura and I had to explain that I was both 😂

But yes, back to Daryl, what a lovely fella, it’s wonderful when you have not just a nice boss but an inspiring one. They are very hard to come by.

I chose it because I thought “what sounds like a sensible name, someone you would trust with your travel arrangements”😂

Oh lord Julie, so sad to hear the news of the kindest boss you ever worked for. I read the article on him, he was really loved. It just goes to show you that we never know how people feel inside. I’ve always felt, that the ones who spread positivity and appear so fulfilled in life, could be suffering without anyone having a clue. This was a bittersweet story. I’m so glad you were blessed to have a great boss who cared about you and his workers. Looking at his picture, it’s apparent he was a sensitive soul. Thank you for sharing.

Wasn’t expecting that sad twist. All through my life, when getting into deeper conversations, pretty much everyone has admitted to difficulties and various problems going on in their lives. Life is such a mixed bag! Great that someone has had a lasting and positive influence on you.

Yes it was during the lockdowns I looked him up last. I’d been discussing his impact with someone then suddenly had the urge to ‘check in’, only to find out he’d died.

Oh most definitely everyone has their shit going on, Anthony. Scratch beneath the surface and it’s all there.

I had a similar boss last nice - he was called Richard. It makes so much difference to your working life doesn’t it having someone like him. My ‘interview’ was in a swimming pool! The interview venue was one of the company (there were three partners & Richard was one of them) staff training/away days in a posh hotel - I was invited to attend for interview. Prior to what I thought was the interview we were in the hotel pool & chatting about life in general - I hadn’t realised it was the actual interview until afterwards! As you say though, he found out about me rather than interview speak :)

A swimming pool eh? Swanky!

You can look for lists of ‘skill sets’ or truly engage with someone’s character as a means of sussing them out. The latter garners much more favourable results I think.
